Gila Wilderness Backpacking Trip
July 4th Weekend, 2003
The weekend of July 4th, 2003, Joe and Kim Abraham, Steve Viel, Sonia Graber, and her two friends Lana and Cesar met me in New Mexico for a weekend backpacking trip in the Gila Wilderness. On Friday we hiked to Butterfly Saddle and set up came for the night at about 10,000 feet above sea level. Saturday we left our packs in camp and hiked along a stream a little ways down the mountain. The highlight of the trip was watching the sun go down Saturday night. Smoke from forest fires in Arizona made for a brilliant sky. The picture hardly does it justice. Sunday we packed up and hiked out and went our separate ways.
